Were Your Locks Tampered With? 3 Signs They Need To Be Replaced by a Locksmith

Posted on

Access control systems for both residential and commercial premises have changed over the past few decades. However, one system that has lasted centuries, and is still crucial in keeping a property safe, is the lock and key. It is quite distressing to find out that someone has tampered with your locks as it compromises your safety. Sadly, most property owners do not even know that someone has tampered with their locks until it is too late. Here are a few ways you know that someone has tampered with your locks and that you need a locksmith to replace them.

When the Lock Gets Bumped

The first thing someone will do when trying to break into your home is to try and bypass the locking mechanism. Bumping is one of the oldest methods of compromising a locked door. The criminal uses a fabricated key to try and twist or turn the lock until it opens. When the person bumping the lock is keen on their technique, it will be hard for you to notice the damage. However, you can check for scratches around the keyhole and other signs of physical damage on the lock, as they indicate that someone has ruined your lock.

When Someone Tries To Pick the Lock

The other indicator that someone has been accessing your property is a picked lock. Picking involves using screwdrivers, dental picks, or pin tumblers to pry a door open. The method takes a lot of skill and technique, and it can be close to impossible to detect that someone has picked the lock. However, if the person wriggled the item they were using, they will leave tiny scratches on the surface of the padlock. In such a situation, look for a locksmith to help you re-key or replace it. The locksmith could also install an additional lock mechanism such as a deadbolt.

When the Lock Looks Deformed

Sometimes criminals will be very bold with the tampering process. For example, if they used force to break into your home, your lock might have dents and bumps. Sometimes deformities can come from an employee unintentionally hitting the lock. Ask them if they have inadvertently tampered with the door. If you notice any signs of deformity on your lock, call in a locksmith as soon as possible to replace it.

You should contact a locksmith at the first signs of damage to your locking mechanisms. They will respond immediately and assess the state of the locks. If the expert feels that someone compromised your safety, they will recommend replacing the locks or adding an extra access control measure.
